Deep Fried Tofu in Tamarind Glaze

RECIPE  

  • 14 oz. of firm tofu (cut in 4 pieces)
  • 2 cups (500 ml) of vegetable oil
  • Fried dried chilies 
  • 6 oz. of Thai 3 Wheels Pad Thai sauce
  • 6 oz. of water 
  • 2 tbsp. of soy sauce
  • ½ tsp. of salt
  • Cilantro for garnish
  • 1 cup of steamed Jasmin rice (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot over medium high heat. The oil temperature should be around 350 F for deep frying. 
  2. Add 2 pieces of tofu at a time in a pot and deep fry until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining tofu.
  3. To make the tamarind glaze, combine Pad Thai sauce, soy sauce and water in a sauce pan and stirring over medium heat for 3-4 mins or until the mixture becomes sticky. Then reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 mins. 
  4. Add fried dried chilies, salt and tofu in step 3 sauce pan. Then coat the tofu with the sauce.
  5. Place the tofu on a serving plate and garnish with cilantro. Enjoy it as an appetizer or serve with steamed Jasmin rice.
